Artist's Comments

This is a small watercolour of my (now ex), German girlfriend Frauke. ( It's 3 X 4 inches. Part of a small series I did a few years back. It's actually Pelican Watercolours and Dr. P.H. Martins Synchromatic Water Dyes. I love the vibrancy of those things. It's fairly simple, but I'll admit, I'm pleased with any watercolour that turns out at all, and doesn't look like some pastelly hippy bullshit.
It's always satisfying to accomplish what you're trying to illustrate with a minimum of effort, especially for myself, as I seem driven to elongate even the simplest of concepts. I usually work in acrylics. Watercolours (for me) are somewhat merciless to work with, which is probably why I don't take them on too often. Like saying something in Latin, if you plan on making any sense, you pretty much have to begin with the end in mind. There is no changing horses mid-stream, no reworking areas you've mistakenly built in the wrong hue, or made too dark. My trash runneth over with failed watercolours.
I suffer from the delusion that my watercolours should read as realistically as my acrylics do. More of a psychiatric disorder than an artistic philosophy, I settle for wasting tons of time and paper, hoping a few paintings might turn out nicely (as this one did). But while I work, it prevents me from letting the medium do what it does naturally, and best. I'm still working on last years Christmas card design. It's a watercolour, because, you know, they're so fast and easy.

Daily Deviation

Given 2006-05-27

Fraukes' Red Top by ~dadenko is not the deviation I was actually suggested, but as I do, I tend to wander off into galleries here there and everywhere. This painting is 3 x 4 inches, and full of delicate, exquisite little details. (Featured by `De-Profundis)

Fah. If my mouth could drop any farther open, it probably might fall off!

I thought htis was a fotograph, at first.

Now I see the beautiful texture.

And if you have trouble with watercolor (gasp) you should work at it mercilessly until you're good at it.

XD That's one of my methods when I have trouble with something.
But you know, I'm having trouble with just drawing simple pictures right now, so I do everything all the time.

Thanks Missus. Texture is one of the things I fight sometimes and something I (wrongly) see as a problem for painting but I can tell you're into it and admittedly, it's pretty if it doesn't wreck an undertaking first while trying to work on it. I'll try to get some other textured things (watercolours) up next, or soon for you. I'm so new to this computer stuff, so be patient with me. ElectronicImpulsively Yours, David

Hee! We're all new at computer stuff sometime or other. As you get more and more addicted to the internet, it becomes easier. XD

And yes, I love textures. They're one of my favorite things in the world. You should experiment with them in some of your acrylic paintings as well, using stuff like texturizer (sort of like cast) and other fun materials. I love the final effects.

I can't wait to see your next stuff.
