Another small watercolour, about 5 X 6 inches, done on 80 lb.Strathmore watercolour paper. I used Pelican (tray/puck) watercolours bolstered with some Synchromatic dyes. I did an unusual amount of layering of the washes to achieve some of the smooth (nearly seamless) gradations in color. There is one area on the forehead where you can make out where one highlighted section was left white a little too long and you can cleary see the line there, but all in all I'm quite happy with the painting. Technically speaking it is perhaps the best watercolour I've done. The purple background recalls the traditional color of the lenten season, and I feel that (usually overbearing) color lends a nice contrast and richness to the skin tones. This is one of the rare cases where I feel, because of the smoothness and simplicity of the piece, the texture of the watercolour ground adds artiness to the painting overall.
